2008 finished as a year that was marked by incredible volatiility and uncertainty of pricing and supply in domestic and international steel markets.
The current pricing volatility continues to be exacerbated by the global credit crunch and slowdown in the world's financial markets. Globally, government's have implemented economic stimulus packages to boost economies and limit the effects of recession. Analysts predict that many of these packages will increase demand for steel, in particular long products which are linked to construction and infrastructure industries.

Since our first newsletter in July, the global steel market has continued to experience unprecedented volatility. This has been exacerbated by the current global financial crisis. In light of this, we feel that it is important to keep you updated on the effect that this is having on the market for pipes, valves and fittings. Whilst we are seeing the key cost inputs for imported pipe and fittings starting to decline, we are yet to see the realisation of these price effects in the market. This is due to the 3 - 6 month lead time for receiving imported stocks of pipes, valves and fittings into Australia. To compound the price volatility, the Australian Dollar has fallen more than 30%. This decline in value is driving some of the immediate cost increases for pipes, valves and fittings in Australia. During 2008 we have seen significant movements in prices for both raw materials and finished goods. In this newsletter we have provided a snapshot of the price movements in a number of key inputs for making pipe, valves and fittings. In addition to price increases, we are seeing a tightening in product availability for imported products such as seamless pipe, flanges, fittings and valves.
